J.G. Guidera's TriathlonIn July of 2006 I had the privilege of visiting my good friend, Oliver, the co-founder of KF, in Zambia. We spent one night in the capital city, Lusaka and then toured two national parks on safari. This trip was both eye-opening and life changing. The people I met were impoverished by many standards that we would use here in America, but the generosity and hope that they exhibited was refreshing. I was exposed to a totally different world and returned to the US wanting to visit again and somehow make an impact on this wonderful country.
This summer I decided to participate in the Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon and saw this personal challenge as an opportunity to raise some money for KF. I asked some friends, co-workers and family members to sponsor me in order to raise some money and help a deserving child in Zambia get access to an education. The race consisted of a 1/2 mile ocean swim, a 7 mile bike ride and a 3 mile run and proved to be a grueling test. I was motivated by the knowledge that, by finishing the race, I would be making a small difference.
While there are numerous great causes out there, I encourage everyone to get involved with KF. To raise enough money for a KF scholarship is providing a deserving child opportunities to achieve their dreams. As I've seen with my own eyes, these children are in great need, but full of hope and hunger to learn, so donations of any size will make a big impact.
I am looking forward to Dewey Beach next year. Hopefully beating my time of 1:26, and raising more money for a great cause. If anyone is interested in joining me please let me know.
